Alice B. Grimes, (Szpila) RN

CUMBERLAND - Alice B. Grimes RN 94, died peacefully at her home Saturday October 8, 2016. She was the beloved wife of the late Francis J. Grimes Sr. They met at the former Szpila's Grove in Cumberland and were married in St. Patrick's Church Cumberland shortly after Frank's return from Europe after WWII. They had been married for forty seven years. Frank passed away October 9, 1993. Born in the Valley Falls section of Cumberland Alice was a daughter of the late Michael J. and Katarzyna (Hus) Szpila. She was a life long resident of Cumberland. Mrs. Grimes was a graduate of the Old Cumberland High School class of 1940 and was a 1943 graduate of the Memorial Hospital School of Nursing. She was very fond of her family, Knitting and was a former Girl Scout leader. Before retiring she was employed as an Operating Room Nurse at the Miriam Hospital in Providence for many years. She was a member of St. Aidan's Seniors of Cumberland, she was also a member of the Memorial Nurses Association and the Rhode Island Nurses Association. Alice was Mrs. Grimes is survived by her loving children Francis J. Grimes Jr. and his wife Virginia of Milton, MA, Barbara A. Grimes, Alice M. Hastings and Donna M. Marszalkowski and her husband James all of Cumberland. She also leaves eight grandchildren, Brandon Grimes, Christi Wojcik, Melani Santos, Angi Hastings, Karli Mordue, Randi Hastings, Alyson and Alex Marszalkowski, nine great grandchildren, nieces and nephews. She was the sister of the late Agnes Dube, Josephine Fournier, Mary Shepard, Stanley, Michael, Matthew, Edward, John, Benjamin, and Stephen Szpila. Her funeral will be held Friday October 14, 2016 from the Karol A. Romenski & Sons Funeral Home 342 High Street Central Falls with a Mass of Christian Burial in St. Aidan's Church 1962 Diamond Hill Road Cumberland at 10:00 a.m. CALLING HOURS THURSDAY FROM 4:00 P.M. TO 7:00 P.M. Burial will be in Resurrection Cemetery, Cumberland.
