IRENE KOCIMA Obituary
Irene Kocima died on January 26, 2023 just a few days short of her 91 st birthday, February 12.
She was born in 1932, the daughter of Joseph Kocima and Anna (Krakowski) Czewczuk Kocima.
Irene was a lifelong Rhode Island resident. She lived in Pawtucket and North Providence. After
graduating from Boston University Irene was employed as a social worker for the state of
Rhode Island. On her retirement she was honored by then Governor DiPrete with a
proclamation recognizing 33 years of service.
Irene belongs to a large and loving family. She was the youngest of six siblings, all of whom
predeceased her: Stella Krochmal, Walter Czewczuk, Mary Chapman, Anne Carty and Jerry
(Rose) Metcalf. Her nephews Walter Krochmal and James Carty Jr. and her niece Janis Metcalf
Kortyna also predeceased her. Surviving nieces and nephews include Jacqueline Carty Merrill-
Matzner, Douglas Metcalf, Cynthia Metcalf Hutchinson, Dennis Carty, Stephen Metcalf, Thomas
Carty, Joyce Carty Better, Timothy Metcalf, and John Chapman. Irene has several great nieces
and nephews.
After retirement Irene traveled extensively. A highlight of her travels was a visit to her father’s
relatives in Poland. She was proud of her Ukrainian and Polish heritage and was a keeper of the
family memories. She was a highly sociable person who was always up for a good time and a
great meal with friends or family, especially if that meal included pierogis or kielbasa. Irene was
a popular guest at family gatherings, even more so in recent years as the new generation of
great nieces and nephews became interested in the family history.
Irene was loved by many and will be dearly missed. Rest in peace dear Aunt Irene.
Her funeral will be held Wednesday February 1, 2023 at 9:30 AM from the Karol A. Romenski & Sons Funeral Home 342 High Street Central Falls with a Prayer Service in the Funeral Home at 11:00 AM. Burial will be in Mt. St. Mary's Cemetery Pawtucket.
